Here is a brilliant report I stumbled across last week. It is titled Nothing But Net – 2009 Internet Investment Guide, it is by JPMorgan. Regardless of how you currently make money online I think it is very important to keep yourself alert as to where the internet market as a whole is moving. This allows you to take advantage of current opportunites, the current growth rate of the internet is not going to last forever! Read the report below:

My Hopes & Predictions was first published on this website for home business owners.

What Does 2009 Hold?

I’ve been in the UK dropship industry since 2004, it has changed quite a bit during the last 5 years. There are some really good dropship companies around at the moment so now is a much better time to be dropshipping than in 2004. The number of dropship companies may be small but the quality is high, excluding a few companies of course!

The End of 2008
Things did feel like they had gone a bit cold towards the end of 2008. Despite online sales still rising which I would expect to encourage sellers. The general activity from sellers does seem to have slowed – on this website, DropshipHelp.co.uk, other forums and from what I hear from dropship companies.

Hopefully the Christmas 2008 period was a good one for you and other sellers. This should help the dropship industry keep growing. Remember to reinvest your Christmas profits!

Dropshipping in 2009?
I hope existing strong dropship companies continue to grow and bring in more products. I also hope the companies providing poor services falter and disappear! Whether these will happen relies on sellers continuing to sell and avoiding the poor companies.

Number Of Sellers
To be honest I’m not overly bothered about the volume of sellers in the dropship industry, it is the quality that matters. There IS a problem with those people who just come in and sell products for literally a few pennies profit on eBay. They forever undercut other sellers and never even build themselves up a business in the process. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

Long-term I want to see people setting up genuine businesses selling from their own ecommerce website. With a real customer base and operating properly. This will make the dropship industry stronger as a whole encouraging dropship companies to grow themselves, benefitting all of us!

Credit Crunch
No doubt the global economic situation will effect the dropship industry. Significantly more people are wary of setting up their own business at the moment. And even those already established will probably see growth slower than they would like.

My Predictions For 2009
I believe that a lot of the types of sellers I mentioned above (constantly undercutting, not running a real business) will go away because they will give up and realise what they were doing was just pathetic and pointless in the first place. I also think those established will start moving onto their own ecommerce websites and building them up. These are both very positive points.

However, I don’t see many new dropship companies opening up (we will get a few, but not many), and I can’t see any existing ones going for explosive growth.

I hope my thoughts in this blog post haven’t put you off dropshipping in 2009. It is still a great way to run a business – and remember if you can survive and build up a business in a recession, then it will flourish when we go back into an economic boom!

Yesterday (Monday 8th Dec) was reportedly the busiest day for online shopping. So was your laptop going “bing, bing, bing” with the sound of the emails arriving reporting your paypal transactions, or was it a nice quite day at the office?

Interesting Stats
Deloitte estimates online Christmas sales will increase by 10% this festive period. They put a total online spend for 2008 at £4.7bn, also a 10 percent rise year on year.

However the growth of web sales is beginning to slow. A ‘Capgemini IMRG e-Retail Sales Index Report’ showed that online sales grew by 54% in the last quarter of 2007, compared with just 15% in the corresponding 2008 quarter.

The slowing down of growth has got to be in some part due to the credit crunch. But now is still a great time to set-up an online ecommerce business!

Big Money!

I have often thought about how big I could build my business up on my own, and I expect you have wondered the same thing. So how big can you build up your online business by yourself?

How does $14.9million sound? (£8.5 million in the UK)

This is what one man has just sold his blog for. Bankaholic.com provides info on deposits, savings accounts, and money market accounts – and it is owned and completely run by just one man, John Wu.

He set the blog up in July 2007, 15 months later it has sold for $14.9million. That is incredible and a great inspiration for anyone running an online business. No matter how you generate revenue – dropshipping, advertising, subscriptions or selling your skills – it shows what is possible.

At lunch today the top story on BBC news was the dramatic drops of global stock markets throughout the morning. All major banks have taken a battering. The FTSE has lost about 3.5% today as I write this, the US markets open shortly and are expected to open deep in to the red.

Is this the start of a recession?

The credit crunch now seems to be really taking its hold, and it may well get worse. Todays further market falls have largely involved the banks, getting mortgages will be harder and borrowing any money from the banks will be harder.

No doubt this will affect how much consumers have to spend, but how much?

From a retailers point of view a recession would be terrible (unless you sell goods people need, not want). The majority of dropshippers sell luxuries, and some of us running a young business won’t have the capital to make it through a recession.

I really hope this isn’t the beginning of a recession for the UK or any other country for that matter. Now is the time for us all to hold our breath and hope, the thought of a recession – no thanks!
